Sanctions & Restricted Regions Policy

Effective date: 7 August 2026 · Last updated: 7 August 2026 · Version 1.2
Compliance commitment: Sol Weather is committed to complying with all applicable international sanctions laws and regulations. This policy describes how we implement geographic restrictions to meet our legal obligations.

1. Regulatory Framework

Sol Weather complies with sanctions programmes administered by the following authorities:

AuthorityJurisdictionLegal basis
Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)United StatesInternational Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA); Trading with the Enemy Act (TWEA)
European Council / EU CommissionEuropean UnionEU Council Regulations (various)
Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI)United KingdomSanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)AustraliaAutonomous Sanctions Act 2011; Charter of the United Nations Act 1945

Although Sol Weather does not facilitate financial transactions, custody digital assets, or provide financial services, we recognise that displaying cryptocurrency market data may be subject to restrictions in certain jurisdictions under applicable sanctions regimes. We implement geographic restrictions as a precautionary compliance measure.

2. Restricted Jurisdictions

Sol Weather is not available in the following jurisdictions due to comprehensive international sanctions. This list reflects jurisdictions subject to broad sanctions programmes as of the effective date of this policy:

The 23 ISO country codes above are exactly the list built into the App. Ukraine as a whole is not restricted.

* Limits of territory-level coverage: the App's screening works at country level only. It holds no ISO code for the occupied Ukrainian territories, so a device in Crimea, Donetsk or Luhansk is detected only when it reports a Russian SIM, a Russian mobile network, a Russian geocoded country, or a Russian timezone (the App maps Europe/Simferopol to Russia). A device in those territories on a Ukrainian SIM or network is not detected. Your obligation under Section 4 to comply with the sanctions applying in your actual location stands regardless of what the App detects.
Note: This list is maintained based on publicly available sanctions programme information and may be updated without prior notice as sanctions designations change. We review and update this list periodically to reflect current international sanctions.

3. How Geographic Screening Works

Sol Weather uses a multi-layered approach to determine the user's geographic location. This screening occurs at app startup, and again before each background home-screen widget refresh, and uses the following detection methods in priority order:

PriorityMethodData sourceReliability
1SIM card country codeTelephonyManager (SIM operator)Highest — physical SIM is issued in a specific country
2Network carrier countryTelephonyManager (network operator)High — carrier-reported country code
3Geocoder reverse lookupAndroid Geocoder on the last known coarse position (only if location permission is granted)High — on-device resolution of a real position
4Timezone analysisAndroid timezone settingLast resort — consulted only when methods 1–3 all return nothing, in which case it is decisive

An authoritative signal (methods 1–3) that reports a permitted country is trusted and is never overridden by the device timezone, so travelling with a foreign clock does not restrict you. If no method yields a country at all, access is allowed.

Signals deliberately not used: the App does not use your device language or locale as a location signal. A language preference is not a location — using it would wrongly restrict, for example, a Russian-speaking user living in Germany — and it is trivially changed.

3.1 Privacy-preserving design

3.2 What happens when a restricted region is detected

If any detection layer indicates the device is associated with a restricted jurisdiction:

  1. The App displays an informational screen explaining that Sol Weather is not available in the detected region
  2. The screen identifies the detected region code for transparency
  3. Access to the App's features (weather display, price display, wallet connection) is restricted
  4. No data is collected, transmitted, or processed beyond the initial region check

3.3 Limitations of geographic screening

We acknowledge that on-device geographic screening has inherent limitations:

These limitations do not relieve users of their obligation to comply with applicable laws in their actual jurisdiction (see Section 4).

4. User Representations and Warranties

By using Sol Weather, you represent and warrant that:

5. Consequences of Violation

If we determine or reasonably suspect that you are using the App in violation of this Policy or applicable sanctions laws:

6. Updates to Restricted Jurisdictions

International sanctions are dynamic and subject to change. We monitor sanctions designations from OFAC, EU, UK OFSI, and Australian DFAT and will update the restricted jurisdictions list as necessary. Updates may be made:

It is your responsibility to be aware of applicable sanctions in your jurisdiction. The list in Section 2 is provided for informational convenience and may not be exhaustive at any given time.

7. No Legal Advice

This Sanctions and Restricted Regions Policy is provided for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice regarding sanctions compliance. The sanctions landscape is complex and varies by jurisdiction. If you have questions about whether your use of Sol Weather may be subject to sanctions restrictions, you should consult qualified legal counsel in your jurisdiction.
